Declining a job offer may seem foolish when the economy is struggling and unemployment rates are high. However, refusing a job offer often happens during the job-search process. Whether the company isn't the right fit, the offered salary is unacceptable or you've been offered a better opportunity elsewhere, it's important to decline a job offer professionally.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. 1
Call your point of contact promptly.
  2. 2
Be appreciative of the offer, but politely decline the position. Highlight the positives of the company. Express how much you enjoyed meeting the interviewing committee, and conclude with your well wishes for their continued success.
  3. 3
Compose a formal letter to decline the official offer, using a polite and courteous tone. The letter should contain the same information you relayed in your phone conversation.
  4. 4
Mail the letter to the main contact for the search committee or your primary contact.
