Job hunting can be a daunting and exhausting task. Employers can receive countless applications for a single open position, thereby increasing the job standards and required skills for employment opportunities. Job candidates can outshine the competition with a well-executed employment autobiography, also known as a resume. A strong compilation of a candidate's education and professional training, employment history, and unique skills will improve the possibility of being granted a job interview. Constructing an employment autobiography requires careful thought, quality writing and clear communication. Following a few key steps will assist any job-seeker with composing a superior resume.

    Create an employment job outline. Write down a list of all professional positions held, awards and honors, educational degrees, applicable presentations or publications, and any pertinent skills. Consider how each employment experience offers transferable skills, as this information will be interesting to the potential employer. Jot down notes, ideas and active verbs that may assist with the resume-writing process.

    Organize your employment autobiography. Evaluate your employment outline and organize each part into specific categories: education, professional experience, awards and honors, publications and presentations, and additional skills. View sample resumes on career websites (see Resources).

    Research the desired job skills and compile the required application materials. Assess your employment autobiography and the desired position. Ask yourself how you would excel. Educate yourself on the prospective company and the requirements of the job opportunity. Follow the employer's guidelines while completing the application process.

    State your career objective. In a single sentence, personalize your employment objective to fit the desired position. An objective may state a career goal or establish professionalism. Although not a required component of an employment autobiography, an applicant's objective can emphasize qualifications or state a professional goal.

    Format your employment autobiography. According to the University of Purdue, resume formatting should be organized (in vertical order) by: applicant's name, contact information, job objective, education, professional experience, and awards and honors. Additional skills and employment references can be listed at the bottom. Note that there are many types of resume formats (such as chronological, functional or combination). Choose a style that is standard and applicable to your job interest. An employment autobiography should be clean, easy to read and one page typed. Utilize a 12-point, traditional font (such as Times New Roman) and 1-inch margins.

    Write with active resume verbs. Examine your employment autobiography and key job responsibilities. Do you appear as a dynamic, experienced professional? Rewrite task phrases with key active verbs, such as "executed" and "implemented." Utilize Boston College's active verb chart to help direct a more focused and powerful resume (see Resources below).

    Proofread and polish your employment autobiography. Edit for grammatical, punctuation, spelling and mechanical errors, as such blunders can make an applicant appear sloppy and unprofessional. Re-read key employment points and ensure a polished look and feel. Share your employment autobiography with trusted friends and family. Once a clean copy is produced, apply for jobs and follow through with application etiquette.
