A poor work history acts as an immediate red flag for most employers. Whether you chalk up your poor past employment history to personal issues, family problems, a string of bad luck, or to youthful immaturity, you will likely not have an opportunity to explain away your resume to prospective employers. If you have changed your lifestyle or attitude, you must demonstrate these changes through action and hard work.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Instructions

  1. 1
Find at least one volunteer position that allows you to show off your current skills but allows for expansion of your skills and responsibilities. Serve multiple times per week, and work as hard as you would in a paying job. Be flexible and dependable, with an aim to earn positive references.
  2. 2
Look for entry-level, low responsibility jobs. Work on adjusting your work ethic and proving a change in your attitude. These jobs can be part-time and will likely be low-paying positions in retail or in the service sector.
  3. 3
Visit your local One-Stop Career Center or Department of Labor office. Sign up for available career-based training, such as customer service or team-building workshops.
  4. 4
Determine if you are eligible for additional services, such as Work Experience or On the Job Training (OJT). Ask for assistance with resume writing and skill-building.
  5. 5
Clean up your social network presence online; employers do look you up on sites like Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Do not broadcast information that you would not wish an employer to see. Protect your online identities by enabling privacy controls.
  6. 6
Allow for a long-term rebuilding process. Rebuilding your resume and work experience will take time.
